Most of us feel down at times but if that “down” feeling continues too long—day after day for several weeks—then it could be a sign that you are depressed.

Depression the signs sometimes is an extreme feeling of sadness or apathy that has other symptoms like sleeplessness and fatigue that usually lasts two consecutive weeks and is severe to the point where it interrupts and disrupts the daily activities of a person.

Depression does not mean that a person is weak or negative; it means that the person has a health problem that needs assistance. Depression affects the mind and body of a person.

Because depression affects the mind and body, it is considered to be a chronic illness that needs long-term treatment. However, it is a disease that can improve with psychological counseling or medication.
Some of the symptoms of depression are the following: sadness, loneliness, difficulty remembering or concentrating, no interest in activities or hobbies that were once enjoyable, overeating or not feeling hungry, feeling guilty or helpless, aches and pains that are persistent and thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts.
In addition, there are warning signs of suicide with depression. Some of the signs of suicide that come with depression are: having a death wish, always thinking or talking about death, making comments about feeling hopeless, helpless or worthless and putting one’s affairs in order, changing a will and giving valuable items away to family or friends.

Other signs of depression are: not wanting to be with the family or friends, not wanting to work anymore, staying inside day after day, focusing on the past too much and not seeing a future.

If one feels that they are depressed or know of someone who is depressed, help should be sought immediately. Mental health clinics, psychologists and psychiatrists can be of help because they have the professional tools of therapy, medication and support groups that can restore the depressed person to good mental health.
